Don’t Trust Carfax

posted in Autocheck, Carfax |

If you think Carfax offers an accurate vehicle history report, think again. The $20 you spend to buy a Carfax vehicle history report, which is supposed to show title problems, flood damage, odometer issues and many other problems, might be a big waste of money. Thousands of people around the country have bought cars with clean Carfax reports and have found out accidents didn’t show up in the carfax report, odometer was rolled back or the car has a previous salvage title in another state. Many, many people find out things that would have steered them away from their purchase, but now that they bought the car it’s too late.

One man went to trade in his 2003 Jeep Cherokee and when the dealer pulled up the Carfax on his car it showed a severe accident with a possible salvage history. Truth of the matter was he was involved in a minor accident, so minor he was able to drive it to the body shop. No major damage or anything… but Carfax reported inaccurate information and the dealer ended up paying him $5000 less because of this Carfax report. He even tried fighting it, he sent a thirty page report from the body shop with pictures, names and numbers of everybody who worked on the car and the insurance adjustor information who all declared the Carfax had reported the accident incorrectly, yet Carfax refused to change the information.

Carfax claims its “the most trusted provider of vehicle history information”. There is one place you’d figure Carfax would get most of its data from, insurance companies. Believe it or not, but Carfax doesn’t receive any records about wrecked vehicles from any insurance companies.

You might say, what about their Buyback Guarantee, which is supposed to protect you in case the Carfax shows inaccurate information. Well truth of the matter is Carfax since starting the program has only bought back roughly 9 cars ! Just two years ago a class action lawsuit was filed claiming the company doesn’t have access to police accident data in 23 states. Remember there are 50 states ;) That means in about half the states in the US, Carfax has no police accident data. Two of the biggest states motor vehicle departments, California and Texas, verified that they do not provide unique VIN number information to vendors.

As a car dealer myself I’ll say this… personally I think both Carfax and Autocheck suck. A good percentage of accidents or major problems don’t even show up on Carfax reports. Nothing beats a good inspection and if you need some help bring a mechanic or knowledgeable friend. If I had to pick between Carfax and Autocheck, I’d say Autocheck for one reason and one reason only, Manheim Auctions, the largest network of automotive auctions in the world, which is where almost every used car passes through at one point in their life only reports more so to Autocheck then Carfax.

I agree with you 100%! I think a California DMV employee started Carfax and all the knock off Carfaxes. You call the CA DMV and they will not give out history on cars and trucks. Before Carfax and other ripoff history check programs you could call the CA DMV and get this info I think it is a bunch of bull!!

The people charging a dollar on sites like craiglist are reselling single reports to make back the twenty they spent to buy a months worth of reports. However some people have been known to scam people by taking the money and never sending a report. Also note reselling the reports are against Carfax’s Terms of Service and if they find out they’ll close your account.

Yes thats true but what i found out is that carfax dosen’t know about accidents and vehicle history unless its reported To certain agencies. Which most people probaly never go through in the first place. So yes carfax is pretty much worthless so many people do alternate ways of fixing their car.

assume if the car has a history it must be bad. They dont know that every time you renew
your registration it counts as a record.People call me to complain that I stated in the
add that the car has a clean carfax but ther free carfax says it has ten records. The worst
part is,HOW MANY POEPLE DO NOT CALL ON MY ADDS BECAUSE OF THIS?

I thought I was the only one. My wife and I got a clean carfax on our 1998 jeep with 26000 miles on it. Our credit union did a loan for 10000 on the vehicle. We took it a year later to trade in on a new jeep and they said it had a salvage title. I called my bank and they said they couldnt help because they dont loan money on salvage vehicles!!!! I called carfax and after aruments for hours they laughed at me and said it wasnt listed as a totaled title in the state of Washington (where it was purchased, wrecked, fixed and then re-sold) so they were not resposible CARFAX CAN KISS MY ARSE.

I am currently using Carfax to check vehicle history. I plan to buy a used vehicle
in the next few days/weeks. I have been looking and am still looking at cars. I am
not trying to argue with the “Don’t Trust Carfax” author nor am I defending Carfax.
But the truth is, there is no other reliable source to get any kind of basic vehicle
history report. I have learned a lot of about the vehicles that I looked at from Carfax
and they all educated me on the “possible” condition of the vehicle. There was one
vehicle which had failed an “Emissions Inspection” several times. The owner of this
vehicle told me that he just didn’t have the time to get the “Safety Inspection” done.
(This is in Texas). When I pointed out the Emission Inspection failures he told me that
its juts a small problem and can be fixed under $50.00. My mechanic took a look at the
car and gave me an estimate of $880.00 to fix the problem and guaranteed the Emissions
    Inspection Pass.

I really cannot tell if my mechanic was trying to get rich on me but the point is I
was aware of the problem on this car and stayed away from it. All I can say is that
Carfax sure charges a lot for what it delivers if you opt for the ONE REPORT. Always
go with the UNLIMITED REPORTS if you decide to and get a Carfax Report for all the
possible car VIN # you can lay yur hands on. I have given out Carfax Reports to my
family, friends and co-workers (for FREE) and also pulled a report on every car that
I could get a VIN #. Yes you can rip CARFAX off too with the UNLIMITED REPORTS option.
There’s nothing stopping you - for just $5.00 more. The feeling is definitely like
    “ITS PAYBACK TIME”

    Happy Holidays everyone.

I have been in the automotive industry all my life, believe me when I tell you that carfax is
not a reliable sorce of information when it comes to buying a car. I did rebuilders for years
and can spot a repaint or rebuilder a mile away. I sold cars for over 20 years and when someone
would come in with clean carfax and I new it has been creamed, I would just
laugh. Preception is everything and thats what carfax is selling. Don’t blame the dealers
    blame yourselves.

In 1 case, the car ad stated it was 62,000 miles, but Carfax
Showed it had close to 150,000 the previous year.
But, in a case where there is a collision and it is not
reported to the insurance, if the body shop does not report to
Carfax, and the insurance does not get a report on it, then
there is no record Carfax can attach to that VIN.
As long as we realize it is good within certain limitations…….

I’ve lived in US 5 years and I bought 2 cars withing these years. Each car I was checking at Carfax. First car I bought didn’t have any records. No problem at all!! After purchase from a private seller, I found out there was a front impact accident with frame damage, hopefully not too big. In two years I bought another car. Also chacked over Carfax and didn’t find any problem. In coumple of months I was installing speakers and removed rear side plastic. I notised holes filled in with body filler that means that it was fixed. Later on there was hit and run accident on the same side. The door was damaged and I could clearly see a lot of painted body filler.
Did Carfax help me? I guess it helped me in one thing - to was $20 + $20 = $40.
Experienced mechanic can even tell you about the mileage of the car by looking at car’s condition. I mean suspention, under hood etc.

I was dooped by Carfax when I bought a one year old Corvette on Ebay. The report stated

in TWO previous serious accidents and the car had been completely repainted! Their
guarantee is a hoax, they did nothing to help me.

Carfax is one of the most unreliable sources to find the condition of a vehicle. Nothing beats a good old-fashioned inspection by a mechanic to check the veracity of any claims. I made the biggest mistake of my life by trusting a dealer, Circle BMW in Cenral jersey where they palmed off a salvaged car to me. I had checked the carfax reports but didnt bother to have a third-party mechanic inspect it. And guess what, Circle BMW washed
theirs hands off it and now I am fighting a battle to get my money back. My personal
opinion is “Never trust a car dealer completely, no matter how reputed.”. And as for Carfax,
use it as a guide but dont trust it. If anyone has had similar problems and is fighting their dealers, I would like to hear from you, whether you have had success or not.
    Thanks

Let’s face it Carfax is source of false information. Of course what is not reported is not known, but you would expect the right information from a reputable business. i bought a car with a clean carfax and later noticed it had damage. My bad for not looking better. If you’re out to buy a used car, common sense is a must. Carfax is a fale sense of peace of mind. If you want peace of mind, buy a new car or else like me; take a chance and prey you struck gold on a good used car or as others say, take a knowledgeable mechanic with you. Carfax is what it is,another way to rip us hard working people off.

After turning in my own leased car, I was contacted a couple of days by the dealer who said I must have turned back my mileage. I was so angry because that was not so. He said that is what CARFAX was reporting. After sending all my records of maintenance and repair, the dealer was satisfied, but CARFAX never acknowledged the problem or fixed it. I say take a mechanic with you its worth the extra money!

for people who know nothin about cars… carfax might give you satisfaction, but that can be
far from the truth… im a mechanic, being in the business has taught me alot. for e.g if
a person has minimum coverage, their insurance company wouldn’t cover the cost so its useless to
report to them.. what people do is get their salvaged cars rebuilt by body shops so carfax
or dmv never know about it because there is no papertrail… i dropped at engine in a customers car
that had 102xxx miles on it yet the body and odometer had less then 50xxx miles…if that guy
sells the car its gonna go for the price kbb puts on a 50xxx mile car, yet the buyer
unknowingly would be buying an engine with double the milage of the odometer…. i never go for carfax… and you know how carmax says they never sell a car that has been rebuilt or has a reconstructed title,
i took my honda accord 1997 over there and it has a reconstructed title…they offered me
$1200 for the car. IM NOT SAYING ANYTHING… but you decide why would they buy a car that
they claim of not selling at the 1st place.. one last thing… people actually know how to
erase their car history from carfax. i had a russian guy who offered to teach me how to do it for $500.
and be carefull while buying a car… look at the stripes that run from the front fender
,doors, to the back of the car. if they’re a little worn out.. then it would make sense that this car was never
repainted after an accident, but if they look brand spanking new
for reading… (BY THE WAY dont write any replies about my spellings , i know how to spell this is
how i type online, i cut word, make em short, wt ever , im helping you, dont want any critics….)

CarFax is bogus. I had a 98 4Runner Limited. My younger brother got into an accident while driving it, sustained $8K front end damage. This was in 2000 or so. Last year I was in a market for a new car so I purchased a month of unlimited Carfax lookups. Put in all my family vehicles’ VINs including the 4Runner just for the hell of it and the report on the 4Runner came up clean. No wrecks, no damage no nothing. CarFax is a fraud. They’re service is worthless to the consumer. Just because a vehicle does not show any damages does not mean it’s so. If the company doing the fix does not report it to the DMV, then as far as CarFax is concerned the vehicle is fine. Basically, if CarFax says a vehicle is bad, then it is. If it says the vehicle is fine, then it’s either ok OR bad (how would CarFax know, or care, if it’s not reported). If it’s bad and not reported, then as far as CarFax is concerned the buyer CAN NOT make a claim against their buy back guarantee. The only sure way of knowing if a vehicle is a wrecked/salvaged/repaired is to have an EXPERT inspect the vehicle before making the purchase. $50 to $100 investment for an expert is better than $12,000 for a piece of junk.

I bought a Corvette and found later. when I was selling it, that carfax reported a “possible speedometer rollback”. It turned out that a company that made up window stickers for used cars reported an erroneus mileage number. It took me weeks and weeks of digging to get three former owner transfers before I could prove to carfax that each dealer had signed mileage affadavits from former owners with the matching correct mileages for each transfer. The good news is that Carfax accepted my documents and gave the car a clear title approval. It worked well for me but I lost the sale the first time out and it took some serious digging and a lot of cooperative dealers.

I ran a carfax report on a 2006 toyota camry solara SE coupe

The dealer is asking for $15k on this car wich has only
3000 miles on it. When I asked about the title I found out

report is misleading and the car is salvaged?
